Haris Alexiou visits Alphington Grammar

14.10.2011

Students and Staff were excited and surprised to receive a visit from the famous Greek entertainer, Haris Alexiou on November 9th.

This visit coincided with the School Art Show display, “One World, Many stories”, so the Andrianakos Centre was a hub of activity for students, staff and media personnel.

Alexiou viewed the Art Show display in awe of the students talent and creativity, whilst many Junior School students hovered around the Greek  Music legend with starry eyes and disbelief that she was so natural and interested in the school’s Greek Australian connection.

Mike Smith, School Principal; Manuel Pappos, Business Manager; and Bill Papastergiadis, President of the Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne and Victoria formally welcomed Haris Alexiou to Alphington Grammar and enjoyed her casual musical item to the young students in the Andrianakos Centre. The enthusiasm in the  school’s music programme was extended to the Senior Greek Band students who thoroughly enjoyed an impromptu jamming session with Alexiou in the Band Room.

The Alexiou visit highlighted the close association between the Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne and Victoria and Alphington Grammar School. This relationship strives towards attracting and nurturing high achievers in The Arts, Sports, Literary, Political and Commercial Worlds and where possible introducing them to the Alphington Grammar Community to express their experiences to the students and build a level of recognition between the school and their special guests. The visit was televised on the ABC 7:30 report, linked here.
