Middle School

The Middle School has been carefully designed to cater for the needs of students in Years 5 to 9. On the foundation of earlier education, we promote the skills your child will need to succeed in later years. The middle years of schooling have been clearly identified in research as being critical to a student’s eventual educational success. The right knowledge, skills, attitudes and work habits need to be instilled at these levels. Our aim is to establish these essentials and to tailor our curriculum and teaching methods to meet the needs of students as they make a smooth transition from primary to secondary years. We do our best to promote an understanding of diversity and as such welcome students of all backgrounds.

The Middle School curriculum at Alphington Grammar School strives to nurture the development of lifelong learning skills that will equip our students for a multitude of futures in a globally mobile workforce. We strive to help our students gain a better understanding of the nature of the world around them. We aim to equip all students with the knowledge, skills and attributes to participate effectively in Australian Society.

In the Middle School we continue to encourage all students to develop their talents and capacities (including academic, creative and sporting) to their utmost potential and so to achieve their personal best in all fields. We ask our students to aspire to do more and be more as they continue their journey to adulthood. Our Middle School programs incorporate opportunities to complete rich and dynamic tasks that engage our students in reflective and critical thinking.

In the Middle School (Years 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9) we encourage our students to explore the world in which they live. Students are encouraged to pursue their learning in a fearless manner, always aspiring to do their best. Leadership opportunities abound for students. The transition between the primary and secondary years is easy with students coming into the school warmly welcomed by those students already in the school. As with all areas of the school, students are expected to play a full part in school activities.

The Middle School operates two streams at every year level. All classes are single year level classes normally of no more than 25 students. Each class has a homeroom teacher who is responsible for the day-to-day welfare of each child in their care. They liaise with their Coordinator and Directors of School, when necessary, to ensure that every child is offered the best opportunities for growth and development.
