Principal's Welcome

At Alphington Grammar School we celebrate diversity and welcome students of all backgrounds. We offer a first-class education in a caring, family-like environment. Our goal is to motivate and encourage all of our students to develop their unique talents to the utmost of their potential.

Alphington Grammar School is unique in Melbourne. Established by the Greek Orthodox Community in 1989, Alphington has been designed from its inception to be academically strong, non-denominational and to embrace teaching excellence and cultural diversity.

We are situated in an attractive parkland style setting close to public transport, major commuter corridors and within easy reach of inner, eastern and northern suburbs. The school boasts an abundance of open space shaded by mature trees on the banks of Darebin Creek.

Today we are a co-educational Pre-Prep to Year 12 school managed by an independent School Council. Our community encompasses some 30 ethnic backgrounds representing a remarkable blend of cultures and beliefs. Together, we have fostered a wonderful sense of openness and caring.

We understand that our students have a wide range of academic, artistic and physical abilities. Our goal is to encourage and support each individual to achieve the highest standards of which she or he is capable. Students consistently perform well above the state average in the primary years and virtually all of our VCE students go on to undertake tertiary study.

At Alphington, we are implementing an innovative programme to gradually increase subject specialisation and student access to a broader range of staff in Years 5 and 6. This carefully structured induction programme will ease the transition from primary to secondary schooling in Year 7, ensuring students are not overwhelmed by sudden change.

We foster the study skills, work habits and attitudes needed to ensure success in later years. Our comprehensive English, Mathematics and Science programmes build on the foundation of primary years.

School Structure

The school is organised into three sub-schools, supported by a team of Coordinators and Homeroom teachers. Each sub- school is guided by our Senior Educational Leaders, Mike Smith, Principal; Tracey Nicholson, Director of Student Services and Staff Well-Being; and Mark Stanton, Director of Teaching and Learning.

Junior School : Pre-Prep to Year 4

Middle School : Years 5 to 9

Senior School : Year 10 to 12

NEW PARENTS' WEBSITE
Run by Association of Independent Schools of Victoria

A new website has been launched to provide parents of children at independent schools with information to encourage balanced discussion about our schools.

The independent school sector is often unfairly criticised in the media and elsewhere over school funding and claims of behavioural issues that are common to all schools - government and non-government.

The Parents' Website - www.independentschoolparents.com.au - will provide you with facts and figures and the latest news and information about the independent school sector.

For your convenience, we have provided a link to the Parents' Website from our school's website.

Material for the new site is drawn from the Associaton of Independent Schools of Victoria (AISV) which represents more than 200 member schools, promoting choice in education and raising awarenenss of the importance of the independent sector.
