Here are some of the most common questions parents ask us about enrolment at Alphington Grammar School. If you can’t find the answer to your question, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
The first step is to complete an application form. This can be found here, or collected from the School Office in person. The cost of an application is $110 per student for single enrolments, or $82.50 per child for two or more enrolments that are submitted at the same time.
It will depend on the Year Level and the Entry Year that you are considering. As a relatively small school, we do have limitations on the number of students we can accept at various year levels throughout the school. This is especially the case in the Pre-Prep and Primary Years, where our capacity is limited by space and our desire to maintain small, cohesive class sizes.
When we are processing the enrolment for each year, our first criterion is the date of original application. Therefore, as a general rule, the earlier an application is received, the better chance it has of being successful.
The majority of our students come to us at the following year levels:
- Pre Prep
- Year 5
- Year 7
- Year 10
However, where places are available, we are able to accept enrolments are any Year Level.
No, an application simply advises us of your intention to send your child to Alphington Grammar School, and places them on our list for the appropriate year. We sometimes receive more applications at some year levels that we can accommodate, so to ensure your child’s application is considered, it is important that we receive it as early as possible.
It is important to us that everyone involved is satisfied that AGS is the right choice for your child. So to help us get to know you and your family better – and to give you the chance to understand us more – each enrolment is also subject to an interview with our Principal and relevant Assistant Principal as part of the enrolment process.
Yes, each child enrolling at Alphington Grammar School needs to attend an enrolment interview with the Principal, accompanied by at least one parent or guardian.
Interviews are very much a “getting to know you” session – both for us, and for you. We understand that selecting a school for your child is a big decision, and we want you to be 100% comfortable with the decision you make.
On our end, the interview gives us the opportunity to meet with your family and learn more about your child’s interests and hobbies, and to get a better understanding of any needs that may be relevant to their education. For you, the interview is a great opportunity to ask us any questions you may have about Alphington Grammar School.
There is no entrance test necessary for enrolment at Alphington Grammar School. However, we do have Scholarships (and relevant testing) if you feel your child is particularly talented in the relevant discipline. Please find out more about our Scholarships here.
Yes, we can bring forward or postpone your child’s intended start date. It is, however, necessary to notify us in writing, even if you advise the Registrar verbally.
On receipt of the application your child is entered into our database. You will receive a letter of acknowledgement to confirm this. Depending on the year level you have applied for, we will contact you to arrange an interview with your child between 12 and 24 months prior to their entry year.
After the interview we will advise you if we are able to offer a place for your child. If a place is available we will send you a Letter of Offer. The enrolment is not confirmed until we have received, and acknowledge receipt of, the signed Acceptance of the Offer, along with the confirmation fee of $1250 per child.
One of the important functions of the interview process is to discuss whether there are any special needs or learning requirements that need to be considered. Special needs or learning requirements do not exclude a student from entering our school, however we need to ensure that there are appropriate resources available to provide the level of support required. We ask for as much information as possible during the enrolment process to ensure that all relevant considerations are made. This ensures that we all have the same understanding and expectations.
