Primary School Specialists
Whilst the core learning areas are important, equally important is the learning that comes from our specialists in the areas of PE and Sport, Greek, Music and Outdoor Education.
Across the Primary School all students are involved in weekly PE, Greek and Music sessions. And our Year 5 and 6 students are also involved in Inter-School Sport throughout the year.
All students attend two PE sessions per week with a specialist PE teacher. There is a focus on the appropriate key development areas of each age group. Within the PE program, all students do one term of swimming, and one term of gymnastics. The Year 3 – 6 students also have 2-3 additional sessions of PE each week to accommodate interschool sport and team games or individual skills.
During term 4 each year the students in Year 3 – 6 also have a tennis program and bike ed as part of their PE program.
The Year 5 and 6 students all compete in the Ivanhoe District Sports Association. Students select one summer and one winter sport, and compete against students from the other IDSA schools.
All students from Prep to Year 6 also compete in the House swimming, athletics and cross country carnivals each year. The strongest competitors from the upper primary years are then selected to represent Alphington Grammar School at the IDSA competitions.
All students within the Primary Years learn Greek as part of their language program. This is 4 sessions per week with our Greek language team for each year level. Language classes are streamed, to enable higher level Greek learning for those who already have a level of proficiency. With many students not from a Hellenic background, it also provides the benefits of learning a second language to all our Primary students – without the expectation of prior knowledge.
All Primary students have two sessions of music each week, provided by our specialist Music teacher. These sessions provide students with an introduction to a range of instruments and music genres.
Art at Alphington Grammar School is a combination of in-class experiences with the class room teacher, and sessions with an art specialist. Each year level has 2 sessions per week on average throughout the year.
All students in Year 3 to 6 are involved in our Outdoor Education program. The Year 3 and 4 students attend a 3 day, 2 night camp each year. Whilst our Year 5 and 6 students attend a week long trip to Canberra in each odd year, and a week long outdoor ed camp in each even year.
